Fashion ecdysis.

Lately, I’ve been feeling all wrong, like I’m in the wrong skin, and all my clothes no longer fit. I used to be curvy with a flat tummy, but the mom bod had gifted me a tummy, and while I exercise to get my shape back, I still have to dress for my present body type. Many mothers go through this. I call it fashion ecdysis, the process of moulting and becoming, accepting the new you, and becoming comfortable in your skin. I’ll be sharing some tips that help.

  1. Dress for your new body: you’ve done the greatest job in life, you’ve nurtured and birthed a new person. I don’t know if you realize how miraculous this is; I mean, a person, though tiny now, with ideologies, emotions, and their whole future ahead of them. You can get a few clothes to fit your new body. You could even thrift if you want to save on cost.

2 Exercise. It doesn’t have to be anything intense.  As little as a few stretches a day, some squats, a jog, or a walk if you’re up to it will do you a lot of good. It feels like you’re in charge of something, and it could also help with those aches and body pains.

P.S. Start when you’re ready, but gradually incorporate into your routine.

3. Mourn your old body. Everyone kind of skirts around this as though it makes you a bad mother. I find myself wishing I’d taken more pictures of my body before becoming a mom, and I must admit I miss it. Grief is part of the healing process.
