Getting your groove back as a new mom

Having a little human can come with lots of mixed feelings. It sometimes takes the mind a little time to catch up with the enormous changes that we’ve experienced physically. I remember holding my baby girl and feeling like I lied on my CV. Celebrities make it seem like a walk in the park but remember that they probably have a line-up of help like nannies, chefs, a personal trainer, and so on. Being a two-time mom, the best advice I could give is to take it slow and be kind to yourself. I realize that most times we could inadvertently be too hard on ourselves and our expectations. Here are some general tips I would give in getting your groove back after those long months of pregnancy

1. Take it slow:

Take it one day at a time. I find myself humming that song to myself on those days that seem to leave me behind. Don’t be in such a hurry to get your pre-baby body back. Embrace your new body and love it. I look at my post-partum scars as love scars; scars that show the miracle you brought to life. Take it slow and focus on recovering from childbirth

2. Get moving:

As soon as you can, get moving, don’t forget that exercises can begin to make you feel like your old self, you can start with some light exercises like yoga, walking, or swimming to help you get back in shape. Ease back to your workout routine gradually. Your body just went through the wondrous journey of birthing

3. Eat well

You need a balanced diet to help in your recovery and if you are a breastfeeding mum like me, you need enough calories for yourself and your precious one. Don’t forget to take enough fluids to stay hydrated. A healthy diet is important in helping you feel better and recover faster after childbirth.

4. Get enough rest

A new baby comes with many more responsibilities than I would have thought possible, so it can be challenging to get enough rest during those first few months. As much as you can, get help from any form of support that you have around you. Don’t be shy to ask your partner or family to watch after your precious one while you get some shut-eye. Sleep is very important and can make a difference in post-partum depression.

5. Connect with other new moms

It always helps to have a support group of people who have similar experiences as you have. Motherhood could seem like a lonely journey but is much more fun when other moms can guide you. I joined Peanut and connected with mums who shared my values. Join a support group or connect with other new moms to share experiences and get advice on how to cope with the challenges of motherhood.

6. Take time for yourself

Ensure that you create time for activities that you enjoy doing. Create some time for yourself each day to do something you enjoy, whether it’s reading a book, taking a bath, or going for a walk. Remember, you cannot pour from an empty cup. In conclusion, pregnancy and childbirth put your body through a lot and it takes patience to get a semblance of your pre-baby body. Be kind to yourself
